¹⁴ "For it will be as when a man going on a journey called his servants and entrusted to them his property;

¹⁵ to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

¹⁶ He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them; and he made five talents more.

¹⁷ So also, he who had the two talents made two talents more.

¹⁸ But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

¹⁹ Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

²⁰ And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.'

²¹ His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'

²² And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me two talents; here I have made two talents more.'

²³ His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.'

²⁴ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not winnow;

²⁵ so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'

²⁶ But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed, and gather where I have not winnowed?

²⁷ Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.

²⁸ So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents.

²⁹ For to every one who has will more be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
³⁰ And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.'

¹⁴ "Quả thế, cũng như có người kia sắp đi xa, liền gọi đầy tớ riêng của mình đến mà giao phó của cải mình cho họ.

¹⁵ Ông cho người này năm nén, người kia hai nén, người khác nữa một nén, tùy khả năng riêng của mỗi người. Rồi ông ra đi. Lập tức,

¹⁶ người đã lãnh năm nén lấy số tiền ấy làm ăn buôn bán, và gây lời được năm nén khác.

¹⁷ Cũng vậy, người đã lãnh hai nén gây lời được hai nén khác.

¹⁸ Còn người đã lãnh một nén thì đi đào lỗ chôn giấu số bạc của chủ.
¹⁹ Sau một thời gian lâu dài, ông chủ của các đầy tớ ấy đến và thanh toán sổ sách với họ.

²⁰ Người đã lãnh năm nén tiến lại gần, đưa năm nén khác, và nói: "Thưa ông chủ, ông đã giao cho tôi năm nén, tôi đã gây lời được năm nén khác đây".

²¹ Ông chủ nói với người ấy: "Khá lắm! hỡi người đầy tớ tài giỏi và trung thành! Trong việc ít mà anh đã trung thành, thì tôi sẽ đặt anh lên coi việc nhiều. Hãy vào mà hưởng niềm vui của chủ anh!

²² Người đã lãnh hai nén cũng tiến lại gần và nói: "Thưa ông chủ, ông đã giao tôi hai nén, tôi đã gây lời được hai nén khác đây".
²³ Ông chủ nói với người ấy: "Khá lắm! hỡi người đầy tớ tài giỏi và trung thành! Trong việc ít mà anh đã trung thành, thì tôi sẽ đặt anh lên coi việc nhiều. Hãy vào mà hưởng niềm vui của chủ anh!"

²⁴ Rồi người đã lãnh một nén cũng tiến lại gần và nói: "Thưa ông chủ, tôi biết ông là người hà khắc, gặt chỗ không gieo, thu nơi không vãí.
²⁵ Vì thế, tôi đâm sợ, mới đem chôn giấu nén bạc của ông dưới đất. Của ông đây, ông cầm lấy!"

²⁶ Ông chủ đáp: "Hỡi tên đầy tớ tồi tệ và biếng nhác! Ngươi đã biết ta gặt chỗ không gieo, thu nơi không vãi,
²⁷ thì đáng lý ngươi phải gởi số bạc của ta cho các chủ ngân hàng, để khi ta đến, ta thu hồi của thuộc về ta cùng với số lời chứ!
²⁸ Vậy các ngươi hãy lấy nén bạc khỏi tay nó mà đưa cho người có mười nén.

²⁹ Vì phàm ai đã có, thì được cho thêm và sẽ có dư thừa; còn ai không có, thì ngay cái đang có, cũng sẽ bị lấy đi.
³⁰ Còn tên đầy tớ vô dụng kia, hãy quăng nó ra chổ tối tăm bên ngoài: ở đó, sẽ phải khóc lóc nghiến răng.

Interesting Details

· Context: This is the third parable on how to prepare for the coming of the Son of Man, and it is at the end of his teaching just before his passion and death. The first parables on this topic were the two servants (24:45-51) and the ten maidens (25:1-13).

· (v.15) A talent was the largest measure of weight, though we do not know how large, and whether here it refers to gold, silver, or copper. Anyway it is a huge amount of money, and even one talent could be worth the wage of a worker for 15 years, something like a million dollars today.

· (v.18) Hiding treasures in the ground was common and the most safe practice. He did not lose it, but did not gain anything either, and that was not good enough (v.27).

· (v.19) Several words indicate the last judgment: the master (or Lord, "kyrios") was away for a long time, and come back to settle accounts.

· (v.25) Different motives are described. The servant said that he was afraid, but the master said that the servant was wicked and lazy.

Chi Tiết Hay

· Khung cảnh: Đây là dụ ngôn thứ ba về ngày tận thế. Chúa dạy mấy dụ ngôn này ngay trưóc khi ngài bị thương khó. Hai dụ ngôn đầu nói về hai đầy tớ (24:45-51) và về mười trinh nữ (25:1-13).

· (c.15) Nén bạc: Nén là đơn vị đo lường lớn nhất thời đó, dù nay ta không rõ là bao nhiêu. Một nén có lẽ tương đương với mười lăm năm công thợ, hay khoảng một triệu đô-la bây giờ.

· (c.18) Đào lỗ chôn báu vật là một cách thông thường và an toàn nhất. Người này không mất của, nhưng cũng không lời thêm, và như vậy là chưa đủ cho Chúa (c.27).

· (c.19) Đây là phán quyết của Chúa trong ngày cánh chung, sau một thời gian dài sống trong ân sũng Chúa

· (c.25) Hai bên cho hai lý do khác nhau. Tớ thì nói là anh ta sợ, còn chủ thì nói là tớ tồi tệ và biếng nhác.

Be proactive to prepare for the unexpected coming of the Son of Man. Do not be lazy or fearful.
